Supervisory Legal Administrative Specialist
The United States Attorney's Office for South Carolina's mission is to investigate, prosecute and deter violations of federal statutes, enforce and represent the interests of the United States in civil litigation, uphold civil, constitutional and victims' rights, and foster partnerships with other federal, state and local government agencies and community groups. This Supervisory Legal Administrative Specialist trains and supervises support staff, provide guidance on integrating software into the criminal division support workload, and provide legal and technical support services to one or more Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs). If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing Supervisory Legal Administrative Specialist support in the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of South Carolina, located in Charleston, South Carolina, focusing in the areas of legal administrative support. Typical work assignments will include: Maintaining current case assignments for all criminal division legal support staff for the office to ensure efficient and effective work distribution. Planning criminal division legal support staff assignments in consultation with supervisory AUSAs. Serving as the Rating Official for Legal Administrative Specialists and Legal Assistants in the criminal division. Providing orientation for new criminal division legal support staff and conducts on-the-job training. Assisting and/or training legal support staff in organizing voluminous case information for efficient retrieval through automated means such as scanning, indexing and controlling of documents into a database. Performing a variety of litigation support tasks necessary to process complex and/or voluminous electronically stored information. Maintaining evidence such as paper documents, PDF files, image files, audio files, video, files, bank records, forensic reports, and other file types. Providing automated litigation assistance to attorneys in trial preparation and courtroom presentations.
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level in which you are applying: To qualify at the GS-11 level, you must possess: Specialized Experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service performing (obtained in either the public or private sectors) (4) of the (5) duties listed below: Utilizing court rules, regulations and procedures to assist attorneys and legal support personnel with analyzing and evaluating legal decisions or case files to identify relevant issues and potential evidence; Recommending automated support methods for trials; Customizing databases and programs for user needs; Assisting attorneys with trial preparation or automatic evidence presentations in court; Preparing motions, orders, pleadings, subpoenas and legal briefs, summaries of analyses and decisions, or pre-trial documents. OR Successful completion of one of the following types of education in a related field, such as (Paralegal studies, Legal studies, Criminal Justice, Business Administration): a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree; or possession of a LL.M degree. Graduate level education must demonstrate the competencies necessary to do the work of the position. (You must submit your college transcripts.) OR A combination of the above-described graduate education and specialized experience. Only graduate level education in excess of the first two years can be used in this calculation. To calculate your percentage of graduate education, first determine the total number of graduate level hours that exceed 36 semester hours (or your school's definition of two years of graduate study), then divide the total number of your excess graduate semester hours by 18 (or your school's definition of one year of graduate study). To calculate your percentage of specialized experience, divide the total number of months of qualifying experience by 12. Now, add the two percentages together. TIME-IN-GRADE REQUIREMENTS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-09 is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-11 level. You must submit your SF-50 that shows Time-in-Grade eligibility and reflects your title, series, and grade. No award SF-50 will be accepted; recommended SF-50s include promotions and step increases (within grade increases).
